I love facebook as a place to communicate with my friends, old and new, to be kept up to date with friends far away and share their photos, humour and thoughts. I like to feel comfortable to write anything, knowing that i know each of these people reasonably well, or have done in my past. These people know my family, my more personal life, they most likely won't ever judge me too harshly.
But, bloggers like to linky up everywhere and are growing in my facebook world. This is going to have to change for now and I will be defriending my blogger friends on facebook, but please don't stress blogger pals, I am already following you in google reader and on Twitter, I shall not miss your posts.
For those school friends I haven't seen in nearly 20 years, if you have NEVER sent me a message, if you pass me on the street and don't say hello, if you never interact on facebook, then we don't really need to be fb friends either.
So, I am having a facebook clean up, rechecking my security settings to keep SS happy and hopefully not offending anyone in the process.

I was nodding away with so much of your post, agreeing whole-heartedly! You've inspired me to re-think the fb situation. I guess sometimes it's easy to get a little 'mouse' trigger happy, accepting requests etc...
ReplyDeleteI love Facebook but confess that there are Friends and No Friends and nothing at all like real life where we have acquaintances (or is that the equivalent of Limited Profile)?
ReplyDeleteAnyhow, I understand and instead of removing their friendships, I have moved them over to limited profile where they have acces to just one photo album and limited updates from me. And they're still your "friends"!
Good luck with your clean out.
Hi Rosie,
ReplyDeleteI have been stressing about offending people for a couple of weeks, I hope everyone else understands too.
Kymmie, that would have been another option, didn't think of that, but I am following them all on twitter too, so a lot of comments are repeated over and over.
ReplyDeleteI did the exact same thing a few days ago. I had a lot of bloggy friends on there and I was finding that I was censoring myself in my statuses. I also was "double following" them on twitter so I took back some privacy and now just have family and close friends on fb. And I feel better for it :)
ReplyDeleteI recently did the same thing, and I think a lot of people have too. You want to feel comfortable when you update your page - and it didn't occur to me to give some people access to a limited profile only!
ReplyDeleteThis is something i really need to do and soon so will start to de clutter this weekend no offence taken ;-)
ReplyDeleteThanks for introducing yourself!! Glad we met :)

I did the same thing today! Had to, I have over 1000 friends on fb, now you know I don't know 1000 people! So I done the same thing.
ReplyDeleteI'm here from the Blog Hop. I'm your newest follower, please follow me back. I am new so please be patient with me, Thanks

I don't use it personally at all now. I made a LIKE page for my blog and photography business but other than that I ditched it! :)

I think this is a point anyone using facebook comes to sooner or later. On your personal facebook profile, the more real it is, the better
ReplyDeleteHmmmm....you've got me thinking about my 'bloggy' friends on FB. However, to play safe, I'm very careful, as a rule, to keep deeply personal stuff off FB.
ReplyDeleteFollowing you from Boost My Blog Friday. Love your blog, Clairey and have blogrolled you.
I have been thinking the same thing. I have set bloggers to limited profile too, but still worry some change will be made on FB that will open everything up to people I don't know!
ReplyDeleteStopping by from Boost My Blog and I'm a new follower.

I decided if I can't remember who a person is, I'm not friending them. Then I blocked posts from some people who post so much it floods the page.
