I threw out some books.
I spent hours with our bookshelf on the weekend. It had
become a dumping ground of anything that was once a tree.
Kinder craft, receipts, photos that never made it to an
album, books that were never to be read again.
I emptied the entire thing to the floor and knew I had to
cull some. I have no problem culling books usually. My novels I happily give
away, to me, life is too short to read the same books over and over and there
are just too many good ones to read.
Mr H likes to keep his, and we have very different reading choices, so I had to still keep a lot.
Then there were a stack of books that had no future. Like
the Cheap Eats, 1999, The Age Good Food Guide, 2001, Lonely Planet Books from
1997 and books about what to buy for your new baby. They looked at me sadly.
What do you do with these? No one wants old news. No one
needs incorrect and out-dated information.

But throwing books out, even Economics in Australia, 1992,
just feels wrong. A bit naughty and
disrespectful.
Novels I have no
trouble finding homes for, but what of the information book that becomes out-dated.
What do you do with yours?
I give away my books to my mum, who may either take them to her local Vinnies, or old kid's books in good condition to friends with younger children. My information books are put into the recycling bin, to be pulped and turned into other things!

ReplyDeleteI had to be tough and throw out all my old uni text books a couple of months ago, it was awful seeing all that money going in the bin but they were all 10 years out of date so anything IT related is totally useless after that long.

My old ones go to a local opp shop. I have been so ruthless our book collection is rather slim now. Guess what I want for Christmas....
ReplyDeleteI struggle with books. I love them so much I can't throw them out ever. So I donate boxes & boxes of books to charity each year, texts, novels, outdated information guides they all get donated.
ReplyDeleteI guess I should buy an ereader to save all the trees in the books I read, but there is something special about opening the pages of a brand new book.
I'm getting much better at culling. Even 'When Pets come Between Partners' went to the fete last year. I get what you're saying about those information books though - giving them to charity often costs the charity money when they have to get rid of them. I have a friend who recycles them into covers for notebooks and stuff like that. If I were crafty, I'd give that a go.

I can't part with them. Ever. It's my one hoarding habit. I read and re-read novels, lend them out, but always get them back.
ReplyDeleteWhat I love is that my kids are now reading the copies of books I read as a child. It's lovely to see.
Some of my outdated text books have been binned. They were mouldy and horrid, and I felt so guilty.
I do cull a lot and regret it often! I am a shocker. I keep nothing for long periods of time!
ReplyDeleteWe have a cool book shop near me where you can take your old books and earn credits and trade them for new ones. Totally love that place! N x
ReplyDeleteThis is an ongoing issue for me, especially as I get sent textbooks since I teach at a college. Of late, I look for big boxes in hallways Around The World that are labeled "Books for Africa"...or, more often, I put the books in the recycling and, fingers crossed, hope they come back as a cardboard box bringing me new books.
