Seeya later Wave Zapper.
I remember back in the eighties when we all went out to buy Mums mothers day present and Dad decided we should buy her a microwave.
Great idea, we were all so excited.
Mum was not impressed. It was my first lesson that Mums do not ever want a kitchen gadget as a gift. Ever. There is never an excuse for this rule.
We quickly showed Mum how you could put chips in a bowl and melt cheese over them in TEN SECONDS!! Or heat a frozen jam doughnut. This was fun until you got to the jam and BAM. BURNT TONGUE ON FREAKING HOT JAM.
Us kids loved this new gadget for a few weeks.
But I have never used the microwave for much more than melting. There is the odd reheated leftovers and the kids like to have the instant porridge sachets for breakfast sometimes, but other than that I am not a big microwave user. It does seem that I am the only person considered to be a microwave cleaner in the house. Not only that, but no one here covers the food they put in the microwave. They just don't care, they are happy to see mould grow in that box and just shut the door quickly and zap that food as fast as they can.
I admit to still being a little wary of the 'waves' but I am also wary of the germs that seek out our microwave and consider it a long term residence.
I recently got the big plastic box down from its perch in the cupboard and started cleaning it again.
Then decided I am not doing it anymore.
Instead I am throwing it out.
Mr H has failed to throw it right out the door and instead has actually carried it back to the kitchen bench to use once or twice before I carry it back to the step before the bin - my dining room table of junk.
The wave zapper is no longer welcome in my kitchen. I might change my mind, there might be too many things that I didn't think of that I do use it for. It may be that I have to buy a brand new one for us to use.
Let's see how it goes.
At least I won't be cleaning it for awhile.
Have you got rid of an appliance? Did you even miss it?
Image - this image is for a Microwave Jam recipe - I will no longer be able to make it.

Only the bread maker...the amount of bread my family goes through means I would be making bread 24/7 and probably need 3 or 4 of them on the go at once! It was great while it lasted.
ReplyDeleteWe recently got rid of our tv. That's been an interesting experience but so far so good. The visuals of Mr H bringing the microwave back to the kitchen bench made me laugh! I can see it happening ;)
ReplyDeleteNow that is something I am not sure how we would cope with. But there is always iView!
DeleteWe ditched the wave zapper 6 years and 2 kids ago.. never looked back although people seem perplexed as to how we defrost, reheat and heat babies bottles!!!
ReplyDeleteIf it causes health risks to the family then it is not of good use anymore. It will only to more harm than good.

I love keeping kitchen appliances simple. Not sure how I'd go without a microwave, though, having been brought up by a Mum who hated cooking and owned a whole collection of Women's Weekly microwave cookbooks! For us it's more reheating things these days though. Good luck!
ReplyDeleteThat is awesome! We don't use the microwave a lot either. At the moment I am using it to defrost my bubba's meals that I make in advance because he is on purees but once he is eating with the rest of us we will probably have no need for it.
ReplyDeleteI never ever used a hand bamix stick, then when I had kids I used them so much I actually BLEW them up! Kids make gadgets more important some times!
Deletewe don't use our microwave for anything more than melting and reheating, but i don't think I could go without it!
ReplyDeleteWe got rid of our microwave at a garage sale earlier this year. I have not missed it, and I love having the extra bench space. Food is nicer when it hasn't been in a microwave :)
ReplyDeleteOh, I use mine every day... heating the milk for Milo, and warming up my frozen raspberries and oats - sluuuuurp.... BUT... my sister got rid of hers and has never looked back... she must wash more pans than I do.
ReplyDeleteHmmm... I don't think I have got rid of an appliance... though come to think of it, that ice cream maker has been having too easy a life of late...
I don't have a dryer, mine blew up two years ago so I thought I'd see how if go without it. The only time I miss it is in winter when I strip the beds and if we have had sickies in the house (think gastro, stomach bugs)
ReplyDeleteOur wave maker stopped working about 6 months ago. Gone and not replaced. One less thing to find bench space for. One less thing to use power. Havent missed it. At all. Do it
ReplyDeleteSo many appliances have come and gone, but never the microwave. It's my defroster and my heater upper and I'm happy with that. I don't mind vegies cooked in there either. A couple of appliances that bit the dust for me are the bread maker (by hand is just as easy!) and the popcorn maker (because, honestly, what was the point of that!). I would like to throw out my vacuum cleaner... x
