And a half

I am a big fan of celebrating birthdays.

To me, life is too short not to celebrate the small things that come along. While some people decide that kids get a party every second year, here the Huey's get a party every year.

Not a bells and whistles, catered for, entertainers roaming style party. But there will be cake, candles and friends and family of some kind.

And maybe it's because we have both their birthday's around Christmas time and it is a long time between cakes, but we also celebrate their half birthday too.

Today Immy is officially three and a half.

This means she gets to pick what is for tea and we have cake for dessert.

She made her choice carefully and requested her utmost favourite dish that I have ever served.

Tonights tea is tinned spaghetti on toast with mud cake and ice-cream for dessert.

So tonight, everyone's a winner. Mum of the Year is all mine and all I have to do is eat cake.

Are you getting enough cake lately?

  1. I love this. My boy's birthdays are close together so I think I'll do something similar at their "halves" too. Bebito often asks if we can make a birthday cake just because and we do sometimes. And, any excuse for cake. Happy half to you Immy! x

  2. Happy 3.5 Immy! Love her meal request - my kind of dinner, just a quicky main course to get to dessert quickly.

  3. Happy half year immy! I love that you celebrate the half year milestones. So cute. We do a big party every second year and we do it big. The boys have both had their birthdays and so it's all recent history. Especially the exhaustion of a pirate themed event. Happy birthday immy! Hope you enjoyed the tinned spaghetti as much as mummy enjoyed making them!! X

    1. Kymmie, a big bash every two years makes sense. I bet my slice of cake your boys get a cake and candles every year though! A celebration doesn't have to be a big bash, blowing candles is often just enough.

  4. It makes perfect sense to me to celebrate a child's birthday away from Christmas. They deserve their own special celebration. Happy 3.5 to Immy! x

  5. Love this! I've always been a big fan of the "half birthday" and am so glad to have found a kindred spirit on this subject (usually its met with eye rolls). But as you say, life is too short, why not celebrate any chance we get?

    1. Thank you! I think the trick is to remember it is just some fun. It is not about presents or effort or money. It is about acknowledging a bit of growth, noting a new mark on the measuring wall and letting little people make a decision about dinner - even if that means opening a can!

  6. What a beautiful tradition, Happy 3.5 to Immy! Like Cat my boys are close together, only 3 weeks apart, so I think I'll borrow this one :) my baby is 12 weeks old today, since I found out I was pregnanty & realised how close their birthdays would be I had been concerned about how we will manage to make their celebrations special each year! I also struggle with Christmas, wedding anniversary (27 Dec) & hubby's birthday (20 Jan), all within a month - I totally run out of gift ideas by his birthday!! Lucky for me though my birthday is stand alone ;)

    1. Yes, having our two children's birthdays at Christmas time was just bad planning! Sometimes it is just how it goes...I am also lucky, being a Cancer baby.

  8. LOL ... my Mum used to tell the story about the time she had masses and masses of fabulous food left over from my brothers birthday party ... and when I was asked what I wanted for dinner I requested cold baked beans straight form the tin.
Simple things are always the best :0)

  10. I had never considered a half birthday before, probably because my son's b'day is mid-year. Sounds like fun. :)

  15. Cute photo. Haven't thought about celebrating half birthdays, but I think it is an excellent idea to justify more cake! :)
