To Pet or not to pet

For the moment, pets are not really my thing.

I am not keen to get something that I will have to look after all the time.

I certainly won't be picking up dog poo or having an animal inside, that just freaks me out.

But with Popps building a house and yard, feeding and watering any critter she can. Maybe I might have to reconsider.

These snails were placed in a very large box and have been lovingly attended to.

I just hope the lady next door with the fabulous garden doesn't mind if they escape.

  1. Cute! Snails sound like the perfect pet - they can't run off, they don't need brushing or expensive food or walking... you must be relieved that's the pet she's chosen.

  2. Pop into a pet shop and have a look at what's small and reasonably low maintenance. Our family has always been a pet family (dogs, cats, ferrets, fish, birds ... we've now got two rats and two axolotls), and honestly, anything that's alive will take effort to care for. Our axolotls have been the most low maintenance pets we've had so far, but they're not exactly the sort of pet we can cozy up to ... and I think we've just fluked it because the two petshops in Moonee Ponds both refuse to stock them because they die too easily!

As much as I love my rats I will never, ever opt to own rats again. They just reek. Everyone I spoke to said rats don't smell too bad, and for the first year that was true, but recently ... ugh. I don't know why, nothing has changed, but of a sudden they just stink.

  4. Sounds like you have a little animal lover! I reckon pets are great for kids (well, for animal loving kids anyway).

Guinea pigs (although not my cup of tea) and rabbits would be pretty easy. We have a couple of chooks, which are great cause they pay their way by giving you beautiful eggs and eating your scraps. They'll eat the snails too!

An aquarium might be a good place to start. Good luck!
