Domestic Goddess Failure Case Study 2: Hotdog Mummies.

I did quite a bit of planning for the Witches Ball party.

It was months in the planning because I had to buy everything around Halloween. I waited until it was over and got everything half price, so of course I purchased way too much.

I also printed out a large number of recipes for 'spooky' food. The Americans really do this in a big way so there are lots of things to find.

These Mummy Hotdogs looked perfect.

I thought I would give them a practice run before the big day and let the kids have them for lunch.

I just couldn't get them right.

Mine looked a little like Murdered Hotdogs.

To be honest, I don't know how I can stuff these things up.

  1. I can sooo relate to this post! I'm always trying things that I've seen in cookbooks or on pinterest and very rarely do they come out the way I expected!

  2. Lol @ the murdered hotdogs! Only laughing because I know that if I attempted this seemingly easy recipe, mine would end up looking the exact same as yours :)

  3. Ohhh. I tried something like this once, only they were simply wrapped in one sheet of puff pastry - and I couldn't make them work.
I think, murdered hot dogs still kind of fit in with your theme ;) Kinda...

  4. Did they at least taste ok? I had an absolute disaster with the oh so fashionable quinoa last week. I'm avoiding fashion from this point forth and never quinoa again!

    1. The kids did eat them. Twice! I actually tried again the next day with the same result.

We were over hotdogs by then and just decided to move on to the next item!

  5. Try using skinless frankfurts and maybe cooking at a lower temp. Thinner strips of pastry might also help - puff pastry has a habit of swelling during cooking.
I feel your pain though. I've attempted recipes, following the instructions to the letter and end up with something not even remotely like the supplied photo! :-(

    1. Thanks for the tips, I wondered if they might work better with non puff pastry too.

  8. Your murdered hotdogs looks pretty delish to me. As long as they taste good, that's all that matters! :)

  9. Never trust a cook book photo! A food stylist once told me that to get the perfect shot of ice cream, they use mashed potato!

  11. That made me giggle. They really didn't look as nice as the original ones but at least they had personality. Rachel xx
