It's not a resolution, it's a Project. Or a Challenge. Or Something

Each year I print up a book of all my Instagram photos. Every year it looks as though Mr H does not exist in our lives. He does. I promise. Except he doesn't like being on social media.

I share pictures like this of me and cool chicks at Cocktail parties.

The pictures of me are poorly taken photos of me in a mirror, like really bad selfies at conferences.

There are photos I take that I have no idea what was going on.

I really need to delete more.

Of the 4000 photos I took during 2013 (not including those deleted) there are about four of us as a family. In twenty years time, if you were to look at our photos, I am rarely present.

But I am.

I am taking the photos, watching the photos, organising everything, preparing everything. I am there.

But I am not IN the photos.

So this year I am going to take a photo EVERY WEEK of us as a family. If it isn't of us as a family it will at least be of me and the girls. Or me and Mr H.  Or Mr H and the kids. He still doesn't like to be on social media so he might be edited in the image that I share, but back behind the scenes he will be snapped. There will be photographic evidence that Mr H and I are very much here and a part of everything.

2014 won't start with any New Year Resolutions that I will break within 3 days, instead there is just this challenge to myself. I am calling it the "My Family and Me" challenge and at the end of the year there will be 52 images of us as a family, which will make for a much more interesting book to print up and keep.

The challenge will mean being more courageous and simply asking both friends and strangers to take photos of us. This is something I find more difficult than I should. But, when Immy and I are on a coffee date I would like there to be an image of who she was there with.

I will also have to make time during family get togethers to get everyone to stop and be still for a moment to capture an image. I have no idea how hard this project is going to be, but I am going to give it a go anyway.

I am also not sure if anyone else will be keen to play along. If you are, let me know and I will add in a linky each Sunday night for you to share your images too. If you are not a blogger but you are on Instagram or facebook you can simply use the hashtag #myfamilyandme and I should be able to see your image too (unless your security/privacy settings keep me out).

My first image will go up on Sunday 5 January, wish me luck and let me know if you want to join in!

  1. I love this idea!! I don't have many photo's of all of us as a family, and especially none of just me. I'm not one for taking photo's of myself at all...I think this is a really big challenge but one that I think would be really great to look back on at the end of the year! I'd love to join in!

    1. This is great news Kristie. I agree, it's going to be really hard, but hopefully worth the effort, and even if we miss a few weeks (I will try not to) there will still be many more images than before.
Thanks for the positive response too!

  2. Great idea. I was putting together a photo book/journal of our trip to Tassie in October and was shocked to find that photographic evidence suggests I wasn't there at all. :(

  3. I'd love to join in Claire! What a great idea. We have about two family photos, it is terrible. This year I am also going to do the "Portrait a week, each week for a year" of the kids, so now I will incorporate a family photo too. xo

    1. There are many people who do a portrait a week Sam, such lovely images of all the children - for me, I have way too many of them and not enough of us. Look forward to checking out your images.

  4. This is a brilliant idea. I've been thinking of the same thing recently, I'm never in the photo always taking it. Funny enough, I don't like asking strangers to take a pic of my son and myself but I will offer to take a pic of complete strangers so that they don't have a horrible selfie of themselves.

    1. I feel the same Julie, don't like to impose on others when I am out and about, but certainly don't mind doing the same for others - even asking them if they don't ask themselves.

  5. I take a family photo every year at Christmas but that is about it. One more than you though. There are plenty of the MOTH and the kids. Not me. Maybe I will aim for at least one at every birthday......

    1. How about one a month, you have December covered, that's just 11 more clicks of a camera per year.

  6. love this. My husband also seems missing from social media shared photos and I am hugely absent from other "family" photos because if I don't take the photo then it doesn't get taken. I need to remind others to take photos and be prepared to be in them more.

  7. another thing. Some of my favourite photos are "selfies" of me and the kids or me and hubby. Practice the art, the angle can be interesting and less awkward than posing while a stranger takes your photo.

  8. Love this idea and especially as our family is expanding this year I'm keen to play along! We hardly have any family shots. :)

  9. Hi Claire, just found your blog and am so glad I did! What a great idea. i attempted the 52 potraits of my children and failed miserably, but I'm going to give it another shot in 2014. I may just have to add in some family shots, they're pretty scarce in my albums too. Once a month like you mentioned would be a great start. Happy new year :)
