Taped
If you are of a certain age the image above will mean nothing to you.
I received this card from a very dear friend this week. Seeing her handwriting on the envelope was enough to change my day, seeing the perfect image on the card just made me really laugh.
I made many tapes for friends once upon a time, and anyone who sent one in return you should know that I still have them all! I also have a car so old that it has a tape deck. I am thinking of getting out my felix the cat suitcase where they are all kept and having a listen...but I am worried about what my 17 - 24 year old self may have been saying. Maybe there are some things best kept in the 1990s (especially New Kids on The Block, Ms Herbie!)
These tapes were when mobile phones were barely around and the cost of using them was extreme. Phone calls on student funds were not possible, so making a tape was like having a week long conversation with your besties that were studying around the country at different universities or jobs.
I loved them. Always will.
Do you have any handmade tapes?

Unfortunately I didn't keep any of my old tapes but I totally remember spending hours in my room making them..you needed perfect timing to press the record and play button at the same time to start and stop the recording without cutting off the song lol
ReplyDeleteOooh, these were the best when I was growing up. I now make my children mixed cds .... but it's not quite the same.
ReplyDeleteI remember racing to the stereo to quickly press the record button when certain songs came on. You sure learned to pick what a song was verrry quickly. My brother made me a mixed tape when My Mum and I left the country. I must have listened to it thousands of times over the course of a few years. Unfortunately, I lost it in my travels but that tape meant the world to me.
ReplyDeleteI loved this post (because I was mentioned!). Our mix tapes hold a history of girly thoughts, tears, heartbreak and wonderful stories. One day over a glass of wine and in our rocking chairs we will listen and laugh. My only regret is I never out any Backstreet Boys on yours!
ReplyDeleteI still have a heap of the mixed tapes that I made or were giving to me. I also drive a car that has a tape deck and I drive everyone insane as I only have 2 tapes that I play in the car. The car stereo has a habit of destroying tapes so I'm not willing to use my precious collection, also stored in an old suitcase.
ReplyDeleteOh memories indeed. Thanks for taking me back to a place where life was just simple and beautiful xx
ReplyDeleteNo mixed taped left. But Justin made me a mixed CD and included one track on it that he wrote and sag and played guitar for our first anniversary. It still is one of my most favourite gifts. Oh and don't you love hand written cards? If fact any snail mail that is not a bill?
ReplyDeleteEspecially love the dodgy 'recorded from the radio' tapes… those were the days, sigh…
ReplyDeleteYes...so true. A mixed tape is definitely an expression of love. What do we have now...a playlist? It's a bygone era... x
ReplyDeletewhat great memories of times when lif was much easier and enjoyable.
ReplyDeleteI used to make mix tapes all the time. A close friend moved to QLD in Year 9 and we sent mix tapes back and forth to each other.
ReplyDeleteMy hubby and I have a massive box in the garage of mixed tapes we used to make for each other back in the day. I miss getting a tape from him or a friend full of songs that they chose for you. I make playlists for my hubby on his ipod and depending on the mood I'm in they can be full of soppiness or full of rage and he doesnt know until he gets into his car for work and starts listening. xx
ReplyDeleteI never had any mixed tapes, but I did have an older brother which meant that I would listen to his instead.
ReplyDeleteI still treasure my mixed tapes too, Claire! They are such a reminder of days gone by, aren't they? I think there is an app for that these days... x
ReplyDeleteI forgot about mixed tapes-we used to tape the songs off Rage & the radio to put together our tapes & wear out the car radio rewind button when driving...
