I have been thinking of getting a personal trainer.
I have thought about it enough to send an email to one for costs and schedules.
But I must admit to being terrified of having a personal trainer.
What if.
What if they make me do things that I really don't want to do? You know, like exercise.
What if they make me do something more times than I really want to do it. What if I am puffed out?
I am also terrified of everyone else that might be in the group. They could be some kind of boot camp junkies who have been attending PT sessions for years. Unlike me, who has been home attempting to be Betty Crocker and licking the beaters on the cake mix most days.
What if the personal trainer forgets that I have a dodgy back and just one plank too long and I might be back to the physio? And will the PT know that I can use this excuse to get me out of nearly every exercise there is?
I would like to tell you that I am a highly determined individual with a will power that can do anything I put my mind to. Sadly, this is only the case if a cheese platter is the end result.
I now find myself a bit of a weakling. Little physical strength, no cardio health and more wobbly than a plate of jelly. A PT might be my best option for a few weeks to get me back on track.
But, you know, what if?

Oh Claire - you're in exactly the same place as me! (Except I haven't done the inquiry thing!) Too many what ifs for me, too many fears of reoccurring injury and too many excuses not to. Let me know what you decide to do (if anything) and in the meantime, I'll be here minding the cheese platter....!
ReplyDeleteI've tried gyms, I've tried classes... The only thing I liked was Curves, but then they changed their opening hours and I started working in the city so it was all too hard and I stopped going. Now, I just walk. And sometimes ride my bike. I have dicky knees, and wonky wrists and a bad back and crappy ankles and while I *know* that dropping 10kg will help dramatically. Chocolate.

ReplyDeleteI've tried PT and boot camp over the years. My advice would be keep looking until you find the right person. I've had my current trainer for over a year now. She drinks champagne and eats twisties. She respects my injured knees and is helping cure my back.
ReplyDeleteThe best part is, she also trains my husband. Recently I complained to her that he'd done something uncharacteristically unthoughtful. She made him do burpees until he almost spewed! :)

DeleteI haven't had a PT, but I was going to a exercise class that I had to stop because, well, I have a problem with people telling me what to do. My teacher was wonderful but every time she told me to push harder I wanted to yell at her, so I'm taking a break before I offend!

ReplyDeleteWho doesn't love a bit of batter. A good pt will push you but also have a touch of warm and fuzzy to them. Do it I say.
ReplyDeleteWhat if is dangerous. Forget about what if and just do it. Speak about your concerns, if your pt doesn't know then they don't know, and could be doing more harm than good.
ReplyDeleteA good pt will know when to push you and will know your limits, but you need to be honest with them too. It works both ways.
And remember it took time to put weight on it's going to take time to take it off and reshape your body.

I had a personal trainer once - an online one. We did it via skype. It wasn't as bad as I thought but it was a little weird!
