May 3: Changing Tracks

I got the idea of Changing Tracks straight from the 774 ABC radio program. Each week they have a segment where someone has written in with a story and as part of the story there is a song. The song was played/heard/sang at a significant time in a person's life and forever more, when they hear that song, that one event in their life is recalled.

It's not a favourite song, it doesn't have to be a good song, it's a song you recall.

"There's no hard or fast topic for the stories featured on Changing Tracks, just "a song that was playing when your life changed tracks".

My Changing Track is 14 years old.

It comes from a time when there was much change in my life. A relationship had broken up, I had moved home with my parents, out to a flat and back home again, I knocked back a huge promotion to move to Sydney and continue my finance marketing career with the Australian Stock Exchange and instead decided to move to Ireland for a year and see what happened. While I was making plans for my future, I was still a bit unsure of myself and where I really wanted to be.

I went out for drinks with some friends to celebrate my last day of work and by chance I met Mr H.

We chatted about how it was my last day and I was soon to leave Australia and go to Dublin.

But one thing lead to another and in the next few weeks we met up a few more times, and a few more times and when we weren't meeting up he was calling me, and when I didn't answer he left all sorts of messages, and when certain songs came on the radio he called my phone and just held his phone to the radio for a few lines and then hung up.

One of those songs was Gwyneth Paltrow singing 'Cruisin'.

It's not a song you hear anymore, but it was on the radio a lot in January 2001 and if I ever hear that song now, I remember those first few weeks when we first met. They were very happy, very carefree days. We had not a worry in the world, other than which bar to check out on the weekend and whose friends to catch up with next.

It was nearly five years later, that we got married and later this year will be our ten year anniversary.

Do you have a song that is your 'Changing Track'?

  1. That's beautiful! I love that song and used to sing it in karaoke bars. I'm guessing you never made it to Ireland then?

  4. Love the story. You've reminded me of seven giddy months in 1995 when I first met Paul - pure joy. I got pregnant after just 7 months, and was so happy throughout that travelling pregnancy. In those 16 months I genuinely thought I'd never ben unhappy again... wrong! But I recall that time so fondly and it's proved a wonderful foundation to our family life, brief though it was.

  5. What a lovely meeting and yes that song was a big hit back in the day. Ireland is one place I would LOVE to visit, I've got lots of friends there that I met during my travels. Oh the days of courting and romance!

  6. Oh, that is so cute!

I have been known to leave messages for Bren with the phone held to the radio but generally for songs he absolutely detests. Because love. ;)

  10. Such a great post Claire! I think that lately I've been thinking about a few songs that have me reliving my past like it was yesterday. Mostly I've been thinking about INXS songs. It's a terrible thing to admit, but I kissed a lot of boys during those songs! As for a particular song that reminds me of my husband, it would have to be REM "Everybody Hurts" because he played it better than REM before we got together. So... did you go to Ireland?

    1. Sure did Kym, I stayed 10 months and Mr H called nearly every day. When I returned, he picked me up from the airport!

  11. I'm learning Ukulele and as I think about the songs I'd love to learn to sing and play I find it's telling me a lot about the person I am and where I've come from. It's equal parts alarming and comforting! I've picked a nice positive song for my blog... well, it's a little on the snarky side but that's me ;)

  14. I have always loved that song and get a slight sway and "bop" every time I hear it! So many songs mean so much to me & it was hard to pick just one. A day without music is a day wasted in my book!

  16. I remember my sister and I playing that song over and over and over and over again on a Christmas holiday with our whole tribe. I'm sure everyone else hated it by the end of our holiday, but we loved it and hearing it takes me back to that time x

  17. Trying again to link my post but it's beyond me. It's a shame, as not being able to link will probably diminish my involvement. Other linky parties I've been in have been a bit more straightforward, or maybe I'm just not Mr Linky compatible.
