Family Moments: a new app from Bupa and an IPOD GIVEAWAY

I use a lot of social media apps and I love them all. When I first started on Instagram I tried to keep it private because I loved using it for all my photos but then it became so easy to share on facebook and twitter and the next thing you know it is open for the entire world to see. That means I don't share what I really want, but what I think is acceptable to the public.

Health Insurer Bupa recently asked me to check out their new app Family Moments. I did think, “here comes another one just like the other ones”. And guess what? It kind of is.  Of course it has quite a bit more though. Private businesses who make good apps really do it properly, they have a lot to lose if they provide something average to their clients. Also, the health industry is a competitive market so it is important to be seen as a leader in as many ways as you can and to provide super accurate data rather than opinion.

The Family Moments app is based on keeping track of your children’s development and has all the usual options to share with your friends and family and show off your children to the world, or if you had a child who wasn’t well everyone would be able to see their developing milestones, with height and growth charts included, (you can see this for perfectly well kids too).

Bupa has included fact sheets on information relating to children’s health that you can read up on, they are in categories according to milestones, toddler, preschool etc.

For me, I am using this as a non-sharing app, other than with Mr H. I have provided only him with access to the account on the Little Huey’s which allows us to both add in photos, comments (called Moment’s) that are just for us. As much as my family is shared publicly via the blog, even more is not shared, yet remembering and capturing these moments is just so important to me, now more than ever. I now have an app where we can drown the stream with images and comments about our girls and not worry about who is seeing them.

The added feature I love is also the TimeCam, which basically shows a little clip of how your child has grown over time and one I haven’t seen in any other app. This is the only section of the app that you need to pay for if you are not a Bupa member. I need to add lots more images of this as we go but it is one that I think we will really love in a year's time. Kids develop so fast sometimes you hardly see it yourself.

The Bupa Family Moments App hit the itunes store last week and to celebrate the launch they have done a couple of things:

1) Asked me to write about what I thought of the app.

2) Given me a brand new 32g IPOD TOUCH Valued at $329 to giveaway to one of you guys.

This one is mine, you will get your very own.

I thought that it was a worthwhile app to share and also with Christmas around the bend it might be a handy item for someone’s stocking.

Disclaimer – I was not paid to write about this app. In my discussions with Bupa it was confirmed with me that they also worked with the Royal Children’s Hospital to develop the Family Moments app so I know it has reputable health professionals providing the information. I did receive an iPod for myself to review the app on and full access to the TimeCam was gifted (usually $4.49) as I am not a Bupa member. All thoughts on this product are my own.

P.S Visit Toushka and Kate; A couple of other bloggers who are sharing their thoughts on the app and have ipods to giveaway too, see what they think and try and win one there too.

  1. My favourite family moment was when I had CM. He was just born and starting to cry. I heard the little voice of BW on the stairs. He had just been woken up by the sounds. "I can hear a baby crying!". He walked into the room looked and me, looked at CM and ran over. He took his dummy out and gave his brother a teeny, gentle kiss on his head. CM was just minutes old. I relive that moment often.

  2. We were on a family holiday and we all woke up insanely early. We were in the kitchen at 6am sharing toast and jam for breakfast. It was the first day of our holiday and everything felt like an adventure, even breakfast!

  3. My very favourite family moment was when... (this is hard to answer. So many great moments with my kids. I'll share one of my most recent favourite moments)...I realised I had slept in on Saturday morning. When I got up, to a worryingly quiet house, I discovered all three of my children in the loungeroom reading - Mr13 and Miss11 were reading novels, Mr8 was reading a 1960s book on steam engines. Got to love that.

  4. My very favourite Family Moment was when... well... all of them. The small ones and the big ones. Quiet dinners or rowdy get-togethers. Chatting and exchanging news excitedly, or silently enjoying a movie together. Each moment surpasses the last one, and has done for 20 years. And now, as my offspring become adults, the extended families they bring into our home create new moments. It never stops.

How true. I read this and thought back, would have been great to have this available when my kids were growing up. But as thewy say technology is moving very quickly. Maybe an app is needed to show that as well!

My most recent 'moment' for my son, was him running a 10km marathon (at 15) and his coming in at 20th overall......... That was a complete WOW (complete with tears) moment for me. It was only his second ever marathon!

I am the original proud mum!

  6. I don't think there is such a thing as 'a favourite family moment' Isn't that the whole point of the app, because there are so many moments. the first steps, the first tooth, the first award at school, the joy of going to the show, to the beach, on a holiday. So many precious moments, we all need a little help to remember.

  7. There are many Family Moments to cherish, but one that stands out as a favourite happened three years ago. I organised a Family Fun Day to raise money for the McGarth Foundation. I gave every family member a job. Running the Jumping Castle, face painting, handing out show bags, playing in the band, organising football players and Cricket Victoria. Even extended family had a job, even the friends who are classed as family helped out. It turned into a magical sun filled day. I remember looking around feeling so proud of all the effort that was given, all the fun that was had. The pink roses stood high while the clouds stayed away and the kids ran their legs off. Most importantly we raised $8000 to support Breast Care Nurses. I would have never been able to achieve that without My Family. What a Memory!

  8. My favourite family moment is Saturday morning cuddles in bed. Until recently I had worked all weekend while Daddy stayed home with the kids. Now I have Saturdays off and we have family cuddles and breakfast in bed. We never plan anything for a Saturday morning as we all love our morning cuddles.

  9. ...is the day I got my driver's licence. Up until age 32, I had always been terrified of driving, but my beautiful family supported me and encouraged me to take driving lessons. I even remember the date (September 1st, 2011). I came home and showed my eager husband and three daughters my licence!!! It was such a proud moment, and there were tears of joy! I know that if I wasn't part of such a great family, I would have never bothered to get my licence, but now it is so great being able to take them wherever they like!

  11. My favorite family moment was....my boys 1st birthday. We had a party with friends and my sister and her kids had come to stay. Hubs and I had a tough road to get our boy, but we're one of the lucky Ivf couples who got the golden egg! It was as everyone sang happy birthday to my boy and I looked at a smiling tearful hubby that I thought this is one of those moments!

  12. My very favourite Family Moment was when I found Nathan, who was 8 at the time, sitting on the lounge, holding his brand new baby brother, tears streaming down his face. Obviously I was very concerned, and asked him "darling, what's the matter?" He looked up at me, and replied, "mum, I just love him so much." I will never ever forget that moment. When he found out I was pregnant he was so excited about becoming a big brother. He really is the best big brother anyone could ever have. Even now, six years on, he will wrestle with Aston, build Lego with him, teach him new things, help him with his homework. Aston adores him.

  13. One of my favourite family moments is when all 3 of our little boys climb into bed with us on a saturday morning and giggle and laugh and play "there was 5 in the bed and the little one said roll over" and try to push each other out - always hysterical and its the simple things which make me realise how incredibly blessed I am to have 3 healthy sons and a lovely hubby. Plus they always manage to push hubby on the floor which is especially hysterical!

  14. Dads don't get to many moments from young sons as they often girate to their mother. I cherish anytime I get but this is my fav. I took my kids to the movies on the weekend- played hookey from church and saw Frankenweenie. It was pretty scary for my three kids. we started the movie with my son in the row in front, my youngest daughter (6) two seats away and my older daughter (11) next to me slouched in the seat wondering why we are seeing a black and white movie... Half way through the movie my son is on my lap, holding tight, little daughter pressed under my wing and older cool daughter snuggled up on the other side. I had entertained thoughts of going as they were all scared but thought they need to see movies which aren't just jolly and to be frank i was enjoying the closeness. When we were leaving i said to my son " we probably should have gone home"- he turned and said- "no because Mum gives me kisses but you keep me safe- I was alright cause you were there"- Guess that's what Dads do....

  15. When we had our first homebirth with Willow we were living with my parents. I was downstairs in labour while Tannah was upstairs with Mum and Dad. They could hear me pushing and when they heard willow cry just after she was born my Dad burst into tears and they rushed downstairs to introduce Tannah to her new sister.
I remember thinking that all my most important people were in that room at the right time. My husband, parents and my two kids.

  19. My favourite family moment was my wedding. We (Mum, Dad, me, two sisters, brother and partners) were all dressed up and looked fantastic. At the end of the night it was just the four of us kids and partners left dancing on the dance floor. Lots of fun and laughing!

  21. My very favourite Family Moment was when.........my son said his first word. He has a profound hearing loss, so to hear him say MORE as clear as day was momentous. We were all stunned & indeed did give him more chocolate. Just like in Harry Potter, chocolate helps - apparently.

  22. There are so many beautiful and loving moments to choose from with my two boys. One I will cherish is standing at the Coles checkout while eldest son threw a tantrum and in anger pulled my strapless dress down past my waist. Yes, it was embarrassing and I could hear the sniggers around me, but seeing my husband chuckling our new baby boy in his arms and my eldest son looking slightly sheepish what else could I do but laugh. Family memories are about every memory, the good, the bad and the ugly!

  23. My all time favourite family moment is sharing in the birth of my nephew - absolutely amazing memory. I can't believe the little boy who runs around and fake eats us with his toy shark is the tiny little baby I saw born <3

  24. My favourite family moment was when my two small children asked could they call my Partner "Dad". I knew then that they had accepted their Father was, and will always be their Father, but their role-model and the person that is constant and a significant influence in their little lives is another person. A person who wasn't there when they where born, but is there everyday for them now. A person who has a choice and chooses to parent them because he wants to, when he doesn't have to. I knew then we were a different kind of family, but a family just the same.

    Peace to you Claire.

  25. ...When my daughter walked in the hospital room and saw her baby sister and baby brother for the first time. I made sure everyone else left the room except my husband and me. Her face, my smile, my husband's proud tears...it was our first moment as our complete family and 4 years on, it is still my favorite family moment.

  26. My most favourite family moment was when we welcomed our little man into the world. It was a time that melted my heart as he was put into my arms and my husband watched over with the most euphoric smile on his face. I knew what unconditional love was then, and I will know it for the rest of my life.

So for me my favourite family moment, is actually that time, when we were more than just the two of us. We were officially a family xoxo

  27. My favourite family moments are when we get down to Anglesea. No TV, just family time. Building sand castles, playing games, writing & drawing, reading stories and going for walks to discover nature. The little people in our lives grow up so quickly it is the simple pleasure of just being together, having fun are the moments I treasure the most.

  28. My very favourite family moment was the day my son got discharged from hospital after 10 days spent in intensive care (from birth) I will always treasure the photo I have of a beaming me and a little baby in my arms crossing the threshold of my house. As he was a 'sick' kid I missed recording many of the milestones as I was just too busy caring for him. This app sounds fantastic - a quick and easy way to record (even in desperate times) that essential info and photos.

  36. My favourite family moment was my wedding day. I had all my family together and all getting along (kids included) I will treasure that moment as now I have sisters who don't speak. A brother who is absent, a mother who is sad as no one involves her (except me) and two wonderful dads who have passed. My children, husband and I will treasure that happy day and hope that we get to experience that calm again one day.

  37. Great giveaway Claire! My fave family moment was on Christmas Day when I was 14yrs old (no less) and my entire bloody family were in on it. There was reindeer hoove prints up the driveway, Santa glitter sprinkles over the stairs, chewed carrots over the verandah and half bitten cookies scattered throughout the house. I tell you, if that's not enough to make you believe, what the hell is a family supposed to do?!

  38. My very favourite family moment (of this week) was when my very talkative Bowler (aged 3)was being well, talkative, and my big boy (Batsman aged 5) said "oh for goodness sake, stop talking"! But my real favourite was my Bowler standing up for his big brother (who has autism) and saying to some other kids who were being a bit silly and overwhelming the Batsman...."stop doing that to my brother, you're making him upset, STOOOOOOOOOP!" They stopped.

People think it's weird that my ex mother-in-law comes from England for Christmas and stays with my husband and I instead of her son. It's odd that I love my ex husband's new wife, and that our men can sit for a beer together. To us, this IS our normal!

When things were simple and innocent.

  46. There are so many wonderful family moments and milestones when you have children. My favourite moment is how my children can turn us all into big kids again including my parents (Mum in her 70’s and Dad 80’s). Recently Isabella and Jonty had all of us holding hands singing and doing the actions to an Italian song ‘Giro Giro tondo” which is similar to “Ring a ring o roses”. Obviously my parents taught them this song and I found it hysterical watching my parents do this a hundred times.

  51. I just gave my mother her Christmas gift. Yes a little early but I couldn't wrap this special surprise. Since loosing my father in law 2 months ago I decided that it wasn't what was under the tree Christmas morning it was giving someone something that they really couldn't have. My mum lives in Melbourne and her best friend lives in QLD. They are both in their 60's, met in grade 1 and have been best friends since

The floods in Qld financially destroyed my mum's best friend and with my father not well made it impossible for them visit each other. It had been 8 years since they had seen each other. So I purchased the tickets, and flew her down from Qld to Melbourne to surprise my mum for an early christmas present. The surprise on her face including the tears were priceless . Something ill never forget

The best gift I could give a truly wonderful lady who has given me a wonderful life and someone who it always giving back to the community through her volunteer work.

Giving is not always what is wrapped under the tree it is about the emotion of doing something wonderful for someone special.

    Although my 5 & 3 year olds wouldn't agree!

Memories of a happy Christmas is priceless

  59. I thought about this one for a while I must admit. There are so many special family memories, and having read about your particular journey over the last month or so made me want to consider carefully what I put down. The memory that is particularly special to me is one that was at the start of our "this part of life" experience. We had come to view the piece of land that we now own and have built our house on. It is 10 acres. Dotted with large river red gums. A dam. Gorgeous views. We climbed the fence. Walked a few metres in. Little Miss "just turned 4" looked around in awe, turned towards us and said "wow. There is so much room to run around". That was it. Decision was made. We put an offer in on the land that week and now 5 years later I still shake my head that we have done so much and changed our life so much in that time. If nothing else Claire, thankyou for allowing me to remember that special time.

I have so many memories, you know those memories that you remember and they make you smile and wish that somehow it was captured on film somewhere so you can remember forever. I wish this because one of my most fondest family moments occured when I was 5 and it involved my Nana and Poppy. Sadly my Pop now has dementia and has forgotten how much happiness he and Nan bought me. I broke my leg very bady when I was 5 and was in plaster up to my hip for 18 weeks. I couldn't walk so my Pop went to the local 2nd hand place and bought an old fashioned pram. Every nafternoon he and Nan would walk me to the shops to buy a lemonade Icy pole and we would walk down to the river to watch the birds. Thirty years later that memory still brings me happiness.

I knew how lucky I was, though, and by the age of thirty-nine, despite loving the idea of more children, we decided my body had been through enough. Just to make sure, really, my Hubby had booked his 'little opp'. The day before his procedure, I was feeling a little off, and did a test just in case... Positive! And all by ourselves, too! The best family moment was at the 4D ultrasound, with all of our close family present, when the stenographer said, 'Now, you know it's a little boy, don't you?'
The room was filled with the sound of many happy sobs, most from thrilled Grandparents...! Three girls was absolutely incredible, but to have our little boy, Samuel, in December of 2010...that was the icing on the cake!
